Matthew Polashek is a contemporary saxophonist, composer, arranger, engineer, and Artist in Residence and Professor of Woodwinds at Kentucky State University. While living in New York City he honed his skills as a performer in a wide variety of genre including Broadway, gospel, jazz, and western art music and has performed in a wide variety of venues including Birdland, Lincoln Center, The Bowery Ballroom, The Bitter End, and The Cutting Room. His current work focuses on the development of a fusion of modern jazz and contemporary art music composition techniques. He has been awarded a Master’s of Fine Arts in Music Composition from The Vermont College of Fine Arts, a Master’s of Arts in Teaching Music from the City University of New York Lehman College, and a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Studies from the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay, where he studied saxophone with John Salerno. Matthew taught high school music in Brooklyn for 10 years for the New York City Department of Education and is licensed to teach all levels of music in New York and Kentucky. He has extensive experience performing on the saxophone, flute, clarinet, and electronic wind instrument (EWI) in a multitude of genres, and has performed and recorded with internationally renowned artists including David Liebman, Bryan Lynch, William “Spaceman” Patterson, Bob Stewart, and Fred Thomas, and has performed contemporary music throughout the country.
