Matt Hochmiller received his Bachelor of Music summa cum laude in 1997 from Temple University, where he studied with Alexander Fiorillo, former pupil of the legendary Vladimir Horowitz. In 1999, he earned the Master of Music degree from the University of the Arts, where he was a student of esteemed jazz educator Don Glanden. Matt has been performing professionally throughout Central PA and beyond for the past twenty years and is featured on a number of jazz albums, including Dave Wilson's "My Time" (2005), Peter Paulsen's "Change of Scenery" (2007), Ryan Kauffman's "Three Little Words" (2010) and Chris Loser's "Makers of Fine" (2011). He also enjoys performing sacred music and was music director at Providence Presbyterian Church from 2009 through 2012.

Matt has been an instructor at Menchey Music since 2000, and currently maintains a full-time studio of approximately sixty-five students. His extensive studies and varied performance experience enable him to effectively teach many styles of music, including classical, jazz and pop/rock. He believes in fostering the interests of his students while cultivating their overall understanding and appreciation of music. Piano lessons may involve instruction in reading music, playing by ear, written/aural theory, improvisation, composition and arranging, in addition to technique and artistry.

Matt is also very enthusiastic about teaching trumpet, and takes students from beginning through advanced levels. His studies on the instrument began at age ten and continued through his early college years as a music education major. Private instructors included Bill Perbetsky and Edward Timbrell. Ensemble experience includes concert bands, orchestras, jazz ensembles and small groups.

  1. Matt enjoys teaching both children and adults and encourages advanced and/or highly motivated individuals to contact him about scheduling double lessons (one hour in length).
  2. If you cannot find a suitable time for lessons with Matt, please contact him to learn about upcoming openings or to be put on a waiting list.
  3. Matt recommends that piano students use an acoustic or digital piano for practice at home. However, a smaller electronic keyboard is generally acceptable, provided it has at least 61 touch-sensitive keys. Matt's studio contains a well-maintained Yamaha upright acoustic piano for students to use during lessons.
